Peanut Shoppe Introduce
For decades, The Peanut Shoppe in Charleston, West Virginia, has been far more than just a place to grab a snack; it is a beloved local institution and a sensory landmark on Capitol Street. Established in the 1950s, this family-owned business is renowned for the incredible, mouth-watering aroma that hits you "two steps into this nut and candy store," a scent so delightful it literally "lifts you off the floor," according to local customers. It is a genuine piece of West Virginia history and a must-visit cool shop in the historical area.
While the name suggests a focus on nuts, The Peanut Shoppe is a comprehensive candy and confectionary store offering a spectacular variety of treats. The foundation of their success, however, remains the nuts. They specialize in roasting peanuts, cashews, almonds, and other nuts fresh on site, often using original vintage machines—a process one customer noted is "worth stopping by" just to see. The fresh-roasted Spanish, Redskin, and Virginia peanuts, along with delicious super delightful macadamia nuts and roasted pistachios, are available by the quarter-pound, half-pound, or pound, guaranteeing maximum freshness and flavor.
Beyond the nuts, the store excels as a premier candy and chocolate destination. Their chocolate selection receives exceptional praise, particularly the dark chocolate, which is described as "incredible" and the "darkest dark chocolate" a customer has ever tasted. This high-quality chocolate is used in various confections, including chocolate-covered nuts, pretzels, turtles, and the highly-favored chocolate-covered toffees. The craftsmanship extends to handmade items like caramels, pulled creams, and various fudge selections, such as Chocolate Walnut Fudge and Cashew Fudge Patties.
The commitment to accommodating all patrons is evident in the shop’s selection. Recognizing the diverse needs of its customers, The Peanut Shoppe offers sugar-free chocolate and candy options that are consistently reviewed as being "really good." They also offer a wide array of snacks, spreads, and specialty mixes, ensuring every craving—from sweet to savory—is satisfied. The staff, known for being "most friendly" and helpful, contribute significantly to the shop’s charm, assisting customers as they happily "agonize over what to buy." It is this combination of incredible products, historical charm, and warm service that ensures customers keep "coming back every chance that you get!"

June 14 · Toni ThompsonOh my gosh! By the time you're 2 steps into this nut and candy store, the smells hit you and lift you off the floor! There is a most friendly staff as you agonize over what to buy. The chocolate covered toffees are my wife's favorite. I loooove their super delightful macadamia nuts. Folks, whether you're looking for some candy or nuts or a gift for someone, or just passing through town, you've got to try this lovely, cute little shop. I'm sure you'll be coming back every chance that you get!
November 17 · Steve BeeHow can you go wrong with candy and nuts?! And I believe this is a 3rd generation ran business. I always come here when I want to give a gift to the hardworking men and women in the city of Charleston when they help me out in a major way. I went here recently to buy the Mayor’s office some items for helping me with a rather difficult problem. No better way to say thank you in my opinion. The owners are supper friendly and you can’t go wrong with any selection. I like to do a grab bag because pretty much any combination of nuts and chocolate is always a win.
March 17 · Jeff Honaker (RealJeffedUP)After visiting the "Mortar Man," I walked back to my vehicle, and Peanut Shoppe caught my eye. Very narrow store, but it's well worth it. Staffed mainly by family members . Some fantastic old memorabilia inside, including old pictures of past family members.
December 20 · RUSSELL HENNINGER SRThe Peanut Shoppe is special. Stepping into it's door is a time capsule to a simpler day. The decorations, the cramped corridor, the smell, and the history all make the place what it is. It'd be nothing other than a museum without the goods they sell: a delicious assortment of nuts, candy, popcorn. The advertising for the place is the smell that draws you in before you even get to the door. They sell by weight or price, and as a boy, I walked in here with a dollar and walked out with a dollar's worth of whatever I felt like that day. Nostalgia might have some part in this review, but I hope it all makes sense after a single visit.
